In this page on there are a few photos and information on the development of Amateur Radio Station GI0KVQ.

Below are the towers and antennas of GI0KVQ. First licenced in 1989 my main interests are in the HF bands. On the left tower is a 4 element quad for 20, 17, 15, 12, and 10 meters, also on this tower is a delta loop for 30 meters. On the right tower is a 2 element 40 meter yagi and dipoles for 80, and 160 meters.

As I said above my main interest is in HF and in particular DXing. I still have a little way to go to work all of the countries on the DXCC list, but slowly and surely I'm getting there. I spend most of my time on the 20, 17, 15, 12, or 10 meter bands.

After obtaining my WAS a few years ago I am working on county hunting in the USA. I also enjoy a few contests during the year namely the ARRL, CQWW, ssb and cw.

This is my first tower and antenna. If you look closely you can see the antenna at the very top of the picture, a vertical for 10 meters. My first contact was in January of 1989 with a station W6IH, in North Hollywood Los Angeles.

Soon to follow this set up was various dipoles for other bands and then my first beam, a 3 element tribander called a DX penetrator.

While the tribander preformed much better than the dipoles I had used earlier, I became interested in the WARC bands. Due to this interest I finally built a 2 element 5 band home brew quad for the 20 through to 10 meter bands.

In tests I carried out I found the 2 element quad out preformed my tribander on all the bands, and because of this it wasn't long before I became curious how a 4 element quad would preform. Hence over recent years the next project and the current antenna took shape.

Above is a closer view of the 4 element quad for 20, 17, 15, 12, and 10 meters. It is a Lightning Bolt Quad with some minor modifications.

The quad was initially installed on the crank up tower. However the 4 element quad has an effective area of 12 sq ft, which was above the rating of the crank up tower. Inevitably after a wind storm damaged the crank up tower, the 4 element quad was moved to its current position on the freestanding tower.
